The Duty Legacy Limited was set up in 2023 under the directorship of James Joseph. The Duty Legacy provides policy consultancy on both a paid and pro bono basis on some the greatest challenges faced to society. The Duty Legacy's mission is to provide advice, guidance and instruction to governments, parliament's non-governmental institutions, charities and private persons to advocate for change.
The Duty Legacy Ltd was set up with a mission to create real, tangible and systemic difference for survivors of atrocity and conflict in the societies usually overlooked by the global north. We work to capacity build, creating change and putting justice in the hands of those most affected by injustice, and humanise the legacy of atrocity behind the politics of pressing human rights crises.
The Duty Legacy has assisted with educational resources on 'Uncovering the Names' of the victims of the Bosnian Genocide with the Department of Archeology at Staffordshire University, reports on historic atrocities and campaigning for recognition and accountability.
James Joseph is a human rights advocate, published writer, and commentator on international human rights issues. James holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature (BA, Hons) and a masters in International Law, Human Rights, and Global Politics from Keele University and will commence his PhD at Kings College Department of War Studies in January 2024. He has worked on conflict spaces across the world from South Sudan to Sri Lanka, the fall of Afghanistan, Bosnia, Rwanda and beyond. He is an expert in post-justice reconciliation and peace building and advises on Rome Statute crimes, providing consultancy to NGOs and Parliamentary Groups and regularly speaks at events and on panels on atrocity, accountability and transitional justice.
The Duty Legacy provides consultancy to NGOs and charities on foreign policy and international legal academia.
At The Duty Legacy, our objective is to provide comprehensive support and expertise in the fields of atrocity prevention and victim-centered approaches to transitional justice. Our primary focus is on promoting and implementing strategies that aim to prevent atrocities from happening in the first place, while also ensuring that victims' rights and needs are at the center of post-conflict and transition processes.
Our specific objectives include:
1. Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research and analysis on the root causes of atrocities and identify early warning signs, enabling us to develop effective prevention strategies and techniques.
2. Policy Development and Advocacy: Collaborate with international organizations, governments, civil society, and academia to develop evidence-based policies and advocate for the adoption of prevention-focused approaches to atrocity prevention and transitional justice.
3. Training and Capacity Building: Provide training programs and capacity-building initiatives to empower local communities, government officials, and civil society organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to atrocity crimes effectively.
4. Consultancy Services: Offer expert advice, guidance, and technical assistance to governments, NGOs, and international organizations seeking to develop victim-centered approaches to transitional justice, ensuring that the voices and needs of victims are prioritized and integrated into post-conflict processes.
5. Data Collection and Monitoring: Establish mechanisms for collecting and monitoring data on mass atrocities, human rights violations, and transitional justice efforts, contributing to evidence-based decision-making and policy development.
6. Community Engagement and Awareness: Engage directly with affected communities to raise awareness about atrocity prevention and transitional justice, fostering dialogue and participation to ensure that local perspectives and experiences are considered in the design and implementation of prevention programs and transitional justice initiatives.
7. Collaboration and Networking: Facilitate partnerships and collaboration among various stakeholders, including governmental organizations, civil society groups, and academic institutions, to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and coordinate efforts to prevent atrocities and promote victim-centered transitional justice.
Through these objectives, The Duty Legacy aims to contribute to the global efforts in preventing atrocities and promoting victim-centered approaches to transitional justice, ultimately creating a more just and peaceful world.
